Fatty-acid Oxidation
Fatty-acid oxidation
The stepwise breakdown of fatty acids that supplies acetyl-CoA and electron carriers to other pathways.
Overview
EXPLORE BY LEVELCells can break fatty acids into smaller two-carbon units. These can become acetyl-CoA, while electron carriers collect energy for later ATP production.

Research Claims
Fatty-acid oxidation depends on chain length, organelle, tissue, redox state, and substrate delivery. Peroxisomes also shorten selected fatty acids, so the mitochondrial pathway is not the only site of fatty-acid oxidation.
