CDC's 2023 guidance recommends screening all adults at least once with the triple panel, which separates current infection, resolved infection with reactivation risk, susceptibility, and vaccine immunity. The older five-marker panel is not the same test set: it adds HBeAg and anti-HBe, which help stage a known infection rather than screen for one. HBV DNA and clinical evaluation are needed to manage chronic infection.
CDC's 2023 recommendation for initial adult screening is the triple panel (HBsAg, anti-HBs, total anti-HBc). The older five-marker panel adds HBeAg and anti-HBe, which describe replication status in a known infection rather than serving as initial screening markers.
