Signal Amplification

Signal amplification

A signaling process in which one activated component influences many downstream molecules.

Overview

EXPLORE BY LEVEL

One activated protein can switch on many copies of the next component. Repeating this can make a small outside signal produce a larger inside response.

Research Claims

The gain of a signaling network depends on kinetics, stoichiometry, localization, feedback, and adaptation. Amplification is not necessarily unlimited or proportional across all signal strengths.
